PSEB issues separate merit list for sports students

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) on Tuesday issued two separate merit lists – with sports and without sports (only academics) – for students of class 10th. Unlike class 12 results declared on May 11, when a combined merit list was issued – as a result of which students scoring equal or more than sports students lagged behind due to additional 15 to 25 marks given to the sports students – the board announced six toppers of class 10 on Tuesday (top three from sports and non-sports each). The sources from Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) confirmed to The Indian Express that the decision came following criticism and opposition from all corners ranging from academicians and parents who said that ‘injustice’ is being done by combining merit list of students scoring high without sports and those scoring with additional marks of sports quota. In the merit list of class 10 issued on Tuesday, Nimrat Kaur from Ferozepur, Shivam Kumar from Ludhiana and Kirandeep Kaur from Moga bagged top state ranks in the sports category. While Namrit Kaur is a kabbadi player, Shivam and Kirandeep are in softball and shooting respectively. They scored 647 and 645 marks out of 650 with their percentages being 99.54 and 99.23%. But this includes 15-25 additional marks given for their sports. On the other hand, in the non-sports category, Nitasha Aggarwal from Barnala topped with 644 marks (99.08%), Nancy from Hoshiarpur came second with 643 marks (98.92%) and Kirandeep Kaur from Moga remained third with 642 marks (98.77%). Contacted, Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal, chairman PSEB, told The Indian Express, “The policy to give additional marks was started following notification of state government last year after directions from center to promote sports. After merit list of class 12 was issued, we got negative feedback from all corners ranging from academicians to parents on the injustice done to students without sport. It is a learning process and now two merit lists- of sports and non-sports- would be announced in future for both class 10 and 12. However, the merit list of class 12 this year would remain same and no changes would be made.” “The decision of the board to not change the merit list of class 12 students, mingled with sports is a poor one as students have to take admission in colleges and universities. Merit list of class 10 does not matter as compared to class 12 which board has refused to amend,” said a parent. – See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/education/pseb-issues-separate-merit-list-for-sports-student/#sthash.jv3jlnCL.dpuf
